Ground Zero, NYC

date: 2012
location: Ground Zero, New York City, USA

The main purpose of the project is to develop the site of the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center (WTC) and create a memorial to the victims at Ground Zero.

I have designed four office buildings, a philharmonic hall, subway station, underground parking, and the memorial on the project area. Most of the site is covered by water to symbolize life and bring a sense of serenity. The walls of the original footprints of the twin towers will be inscribed with the victims’ names.

Each year on September 11, at 8:46 AM for the North Tower, and 9:03 AM for the South Tower, the footprint walls will lower via a hydraulic mechanism and fill with water from the surrounding reservoirs. The second part of the anniversary commemoration will be a laser show. Special devices in the footprints will create dense fog. Laser projections of the original WTC towers will appear.
